KICRO – Knowledge and Identification of CROp diseases for sustainable food safety
An Erasmus+ project developing knowledge and digital tools for identifying crop diseases and improving the safety and quality of food production.

KICRO: a new Erasmus+ project to combat crop diseases
Crop diseases pose a serious threat to food security and sustainability, causing significant losses in yield and quality throughout the food chain. To address this challenge, a new Erasmus+ project called KICRO (Knowledge and Identification of CROp diseases for sustainable food safety) has been launched.
KICRO aims to provide the fruit-growing sector (farmers and packing-house workers) with tools to improve their knowledge and better identify fruit and vegetable diseases and disorders (pathological and physiological) and their causes. The project will develop an online platform with interactive modules, videos, quizzes and case studies, as well as a mobile application with an AI-based disease identification tool.
The project consortium consists of six partners from five countries: Poland, Cyprus, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. The partners have complementary expertise in fruit production, plant pathology, digital technologies and education.
Partners:
International Academy of Applied Sciences in Łomża (Poland): Applicant organisation and leader of the project management work package. A higher education institution offering various programmes related to agriculture and agribusiness.
REZOS BRANDS ANONYMI EMPORIKI ETERIA IDON DIATROFIS (Greece): Leader of the communication and dissemination work package. An agri-food SME specialising in superfoods and functional foods.
COSVITEC SOCIETA CONSORTILE ARL (Italy): Leader of the educational materials package. A vocational training centre providing courses and consultancy in various sectors, including agriculture and food.
S.E.A.L CYPRUS (CYPRUS ORGANIZATION FOR SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION AND ACTIVE LEARNING) (Cyprus): Leader of training package 4. A non-governmental organisation promoting lifelong learning, social inclusion and active citizenship.
Balkan Bridge EOOD (Bulgaria): Leader of the evaluation of the pilot training activity. An SME offering services and solutions in education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Polish Farm Advisory and Training Centre not-for-profit Sp. z o. o. (Poland): Leader of the crop and disease selection activity. An SME providing advisory and training services for farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
The project runs for 24 months, starting in September 2023.
KICRO is expected to have a positive impact on the fruit-growing sector by enhancing the skills and competences of the target groups, improving product quality and safety, reducing the environmental impact of production and increasing the sector’s competitiveness and innovation.
More information about the project will soon be available on its official website and social media channels. Stay tuned!
