BioMonitor4CAP – biodiversity monitoring in agricultural landscapes
An international project developing advanced biodiversity monitoring approaches for European agricultural landscapes.

About the project
Unsustainable agricultural practices are major factors affecting habitat and species diversity in EU agricultural landscapes. However, peatlands, grasslands and species associated with agriculture are of greatest concern. The ongoing negative impacts of unsustainable farming practices highlight the need for a fully integrated approach linking the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Farm to Fork Strategy. Supporting the European Commission’s ambitions to improve biodiversity in agricultural landscapes requires advanced systems for monitoring biodiversity and its changes over time and space. Such biodiversity monitoring systems will support the implementation of results-based policies in European agricultural landscapes.
Project duration: 48 months (1.12.2022-30.11.2026)

Project objective
The BioMonitor4CAP project aims to design advanced biodiversity monitoring systems, primarily assessing the diversity of selected species and habitats. These will be tested, calibrated and demonstrated in five European regions representing the EU’s main agroecological regions and one region in Peru representing a global biodiversity hotspot. The project will combine traditional indicator systems that form part of the European monitoring framework (e.g. the Farmland Bird Index) with various indicator systems, most of which have recently been developed and used as standalone systems: i) new indicator species (e.g. bush crickets), ii) genetic diversity (eDNA), iii) on-site sensors (e.g. wingbeat frequency, acoustic signals), iv) functional diversity (e.g. pollinators) and iv) various spatial measures.
