On 29 April, students in the second year of the part-time Master's programme in Agriculture took part in fieldwork as a practical complement to the theoretical content of the lectures on Environmental and Preventive Conditions for Animal Production. As part of the fieldwork, the students visited two dairy farms in Borkowo. The first facility is a state-of-the-art free-standing enclosure with a cracked floor, which will be put into operation in 2022. A basic herd of 140 dairy cows will eventually be accommodated in the enclosure by 208 cows, operated by three controlled-movement mallet robots. The second herd is also a free-range herd with a herd of 70 dairy cows, in which the milking takes place in a feeding hall. The students were able to observe the behaviour of the cows in the herd, which gave them a high rating for their well-being and fitness. In both enclosures, the animals were provided with very good environmental conditions, including efficient gravity ventilation and optimal use of natural lighting. Farmers attach great importance to the well-being of dairy cows and calves, which results in excellent production results. Based on their own observations, photographic documentation and information from breeders, students will prepare reports that will form the basis for fieldwork. We would like to thank the farmers for giving us a tour of the fields and an excellent lesson in the practical aspects of dairy farming.
