Project objective:

The BioMonitor4CAP project aims to design advanced biodiversity monitoring systems, mainly assessing the diversity of selected species and habitats, which will be tested, calibrated and demonstrated in five European regions representing the main agroecological regions of the EU and one region in Peru representing one of the global biodiversity hotspots. The project will combine classical indicator systems which are part of the European monitoring framework (e.g. Agricultural Birds Index) with various indicator systems, most recently developed and used as stand-alone systems: (i) new indicator species (e.g. grasshopper), (ii) genetic diversity (eDNA), (iii) on-site sensors (e.g. wing beat frequency, acoustic sounds), (iv) functional diversity (e.g. pollinators) and (iv) different spatial measurements.

Project context:

Unsustainable farming practices are the main factors affecting habitat and species diversity in EU agricultural landscapes. However, peatlands, meadows and agricultural species are of greatest concern. The ongoing negative impacts of unsustainable farming practices underline the need for a fully integrated approach between the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the Farm to Table Strategy. In support of the EC's ambitions to improve the biodiversity of agricultural landscapes, advanced systems are needed to monitor biodiversity and its changes over time and space. Such biodiversity monitoring systems will support the implementation of results-based policies in European agricultural landscapes.

Project duration: 48 months (1.12.2022-30.11.2026)

The project has 23 partners from different European countries and Peru.
